In October of 2008 I decided to start entering running races and in doing so I raised £710 for a local charity (Cancer Support Cynnon Valley). I started by entering 3 completely different races, a 10k cross country race, a 5 mile there and back road race and a 5k lapped night time road race.
By doing this I discovered a few different things, firstly cross country is lots of fun but so much more difficult, I don’t like running laps and that there isn’t much of a feeling of achievement in running 5k especially after successfully completing a 10k previously.
In March I entered a 10k road race which I enjoyed, and I think I realised then that my preferred race types are 5mile-10k road races, that’s not to say I wont enter other types and in fact I do aim to move up to a half marathon at some point but I am finding progressing to running further than 8 miles a difficulty.
I’m not a fast runner but I don’t do this to be an Olympic caliber athlete, I started to raise a bit of money for charity and to get into shape, I’m still very out of shape and have a lot of work still to do, and I would like to run for charity again but I would like to wait until I have another big challenge in front of me before I do so.
