I have had a number of poems published over the past couple of years (mainly by Noble House Publishing) and try to write in as many styles as I can. I write Haiku, Limericks, comedic, autobiographical, rhythmic and non-rhythmic, observational and monologue type poems. Whether this diversification hinders or helps my writing is undecided but I’d get too bored writing the same style over and over again.
I particularly enjoy reading the works of Dylan Thomas, William Shakespeare’s sonnets, Edgar Allen Poe, Clive Anderson, Big Poppa E and I also really enjoy the lyrics of Richey James, Kurt Cobain, Nick Cave and Jake Thackray.
In the past I have worked with a number of people on many musical projects ranging from Pop (The SuperDudes Club) and Metal (Sheepteeth) to Electronic (Shades of Beige) and free improve (Today’s Date). Sheepteeth went on to record about 6 albums worth of material and The SuperDudes Club were even offered a recording contract which we never accepted (it was really rubbish! but it was a contract none the less). I’ve even worked on some hip-hop with S.T.V.C. and on some of my own solo stuff.
Lately I’ve been working on fixing up my computer to enable me to start recording on my own again, I did this a couple of years ago and some of the results were quite pleasing, hopefully I can re-create some of that “magic” (Hmmm?).
Some of my biggest musical influences are Johnny Cash, Jake Thackray, The Bloodhound Gang, Otis Lee Crenshaw, Helen Love, Plan B, Jamie T, Jurrasic 5, Nerf Herder, Scatman John, The Beautiful South, Jason Downs, Me First and The Gimme Gimme’s, The Shirehorses and more recently Flobots.
I’ve worked with my buddy Hugh on a Sheepteeth music video and the Run Dudey! Run! promo video, I have also recently bought a camcorder and have started to record and make short video clips, their a bit cheap at the moment but I’m a beginner and I can only get better.
Thanks for reading,
Rhys
